We are writing to encourage you to join in a relief effort
to help the hurricane victims along the Gulf Coast.
MissionFish has created a list of organizations that are helping in the affected areas.

We are sending this out to the b4k list and to other
groups and communities on ebay.

We are creating a logo and are suggesting artists use the
acronym, ‘A2H’ (Art to Help) to show a united effort
from eBay artists. Artists can choose any one of the
non-profit organizations they wish.

No rules. If you would like to participate, here is the

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – August 1, 2005 – “You’ve gotta have art!” That’s what hundreds of self-representing eBay artists from across the United States and Canada thought as they banded together July 15-25 to sell their art and donate proceeds to support art programs of Hole in the Wall Camps (HITWC).

From July 15-25, 2005, artists with original works listed within eBay’s Art Category ( http://art.ebay.com) participated in an unprecedented grassroots charity benefit, bids-4-kids. Artists listed nearly 750 original paintings, sculptures, prints and even painted rocks for the event and donated between 10% and 100% of their proceeds to go directly to Hole in the Wall Camps’ art programs. Paul Newman founded the first Hole in the Wall Camp in Ashford, Conn., in 1988. To date, nearly 100,000 children worldwide have attended Hole in the Wall Camps and programs free of charge in California, Connecticut, New York, Florida, France, England, North Carolina, Ireland, Israel (opening in 2006), and programs in Africa, and Thailand. HITWC provide magical camp experiences for children with conditions such as cancer, hemophilia, Crohn’s & Colitis, sickle cell anemia and HIV/AIDS. In addition to arts and crafts, children at HITWC participate in swimming, horseback riding, ropes courses, theater and outdoor camping.

Artists are taking charge and delivering paintings right into customers’ hands without gallery openings or commissions. Artists are also changing the way they donate to charities. Typically, artists donate artwork and non-profit entities would sell the artwork to raise funds. "I am the mother of three sons. My youngest son had a terrible accident when he was 6 years old. My husband and I spent weeks at Children's Hospital dealing with the drama of having a very sick child in critical condition.

One of the most touching memories is when I would see little cancer patients riding their tricycles in the halls with the nurse following, IV's still hooked up. Some of these little angels spent their last days there, yet still radiated that innocence and a sense of play if they had an energetic day. I got to know faces and looked forward to seeing them or their families. Words are rarely spoken with these families as we felt as if we were intruding. But we were united in the saddest way, and had a silent bond that would somehow give eachother strength. It was heartbreaking when I wouldn't see them, and I would wonder if their stay was over.

My life changed forever after that experience. We came too close to losing a child and I will always feel a kinship with these brave children and families as they fight for what so many of us take for granted.

I am very proud to be a part of this group."

"I lost my husband, as a young man, to cancer after a very long and brave fight. There were days we felt life was so unfair and anger and self pity would set in, it's a bad way to spend what little time you have left. Fortunately, we spent alot of time at Memorial Sloane Kettering, they have a very large children's population. Those little ones, in their innocence, enjoyed each day
whatever they were able to. Their little faces made us feel ashamed of our anger and lucky to have enjoyed as much life as we had. They showed us how to appreciate the time remaining, God bless them all, anything I can do to bring one moment of joy I am happy to participate in, Bids for Kids is very worthwhile!"

to Benefit ‘Hole in the Wall’ Camps
Hundreds of Self-Representing Artists Selling Works to Help Children

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – July 5, 2005 – Art often imitates life. This summer, however, hundreds of self-representing artists from across the United States and Canada will use art to help enhance the lives of hundreds of children suffering from life-threatening illnesses.

From July 15-25, 2005, artists with original works listed within eBay’s Art Category ( http://art.ebay.com) will join together and participate in an effort called Bids-4-Kids to benefit the Hole in the Wall Camps (HITWC). HITWC are year-round Camps for children with serious illnesses and life-threatening conditions. Each time a participating artist sells a piece during the benefit, proceeds from the sale – ranging from 10 to 100 percent – will be donated to HITWC’s art programs.

Bids-4-Kids was conceived by a group of established eBay artists who wanted to showcase original art on eBay, while contributing to a charitable cause. Because many artists who sell works on eBay have close ties with children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, interest in participating in this grassroots fundraising effort was immediate and immense. Within 48 hours of the program’s announcement through message board posts, nearly 250 artists joined the effort. Today, more than 500 have volunteered to participate in the benefit.

“Participating in this charity auction is a fabulous opportunity to meet new friends, share my art and help bring joy to the lives of these children,” said Marge Litvinskas, Committee for Bids-4-Kids member.

"On becoming a professional artist on eBay . . .

When I became a mother, my purpous in life was more realized. I wanted to provide a good home and family lifestyle for my children that I never knew.

As an artist, I struggled to pursue my professional and aesthetic career within the confines of a degree. For 3 semesters, I attained recognition and admiration among my professors in the studies of graphic design and fine art, but what I knew I was meant to do, was set aside, because I believed that doing what I loved was not enough to make an income.

On the side, I continued to draw and paint. My two little boys were growing up so fast, and I began to feel the stress of homework and keeping up the home. It was becoming such a chore just to put my coat in the closet! I wanted to spend more time with my children, especially my youngest son who was only 2 months at the time. While a college education could have provided me with a career that would allow me to create a good life, for my two young children, the time I spent attaining the degree deprived my children of myself

While I was attending college, I had numerous people ask for me to do paintings or graphic design for them. The offers were overwhelming. It became clear that I had the potential to do what I loved, and the money would follow.

Before I knew it, I was being the mother I wanted to be, spending my time with my children. I would paint when they napped, and in the wee hours of the morning. After a few months my 20 mth old son, Donovan, began finger painting along side me.

Why I sell on Ebay . . .

I loved the idea of being able to connect with people all over the world, and share my art without the limits of space and time between us. Ebay was the perfect avenue to accomplish this. I have sold hundreds of artworks to private and corporate collectors throughout the United States as well as France, Australia, England, Japan, Portugal, Guatemala, Finland, and in the Mediterranean island of Malta, and look forward to offering my art for many years to come.

Why Hole in The Wall Gang...

When I heard about this charity, I was thrilled and elated to be able to participate in something higher than myself, in a cause that was noble and worthy of the attention it deserved. Having traveled to Haiti to help poor and ill children, as well as having personal struggles with the loss of my first child, I have always felt strongly to help change the future for our children. Art, being my passion, is something I desire to share with children, as I know it is what helped me get through hard times in my life as a child.

I hope that offering my art through this auction, will provide not only the supplies that these children need, but give them hope and excitement to know that there are people are there who care about them dearly and want to see them prosper!"

"I was miss-diagnosed in 1999 with having permanent nerve damage to my left leg when I fell off a ladder while fixing my booth at a show. I was an up-coming South Florida sports artist that had developed a huge client base all around the world when I had to stop working. They had me do all kinds of tests, I was on every pain medication you can imagine and walking with a cane soon to be in a wheelchair. I was in the hospital constantly, almost overdosing.
In the meantime, I was still painting because I couldn't do anything else.
One day in 2003 I had asked my Dr. to x-ray my knee, because no-one bothered to look at it. I said to him "Amuse me - x-ray it". Sure enough he did and found something had me get an MRI and I had a tear in my knee! I had my surgery in January of 2004 and went off all the medication all by myself. Suddenly, I was 'normal' again. It was something that was hard to deal with. Now I had all these bills, hundreds of paintings and decided that I was given another chance so I wanted to go back to showing. My tent needed updating, and with no income (didn't qualify for social security - that’s another story in its self!), I decided to sell some books on eBay. When I saw how easy that was, I figured I'll sell some of my paintings that are just sitting around. So, I put some up and they went fast! I couldn't believe it! After about 4 - 5 months, I was able to make enough money to afford a new booth, space fees for shows and more! EBay helped me get out of a slump and back into the loop again. Since then, I now have a store, a huge eBay following and have regain my status as 'The sports artist that everyone knew in Florida'. When I saw what this group was doing, I had to be a part of it to give back what was given to me.

"My life as an artist was forever changed in 2000. After being diagnosed with breast cancer, I started using my art as therapy. In January 2003, I gave up my career in illustration to paint full time, starting with canvas. Painting on canvas was acceptable, but it was also perfectly square and smooth, not like anything found in nature. Having a strong passion for recycling - and at this point in my life feeling slightly broken with a few good dings here and there - I started looking at ordinary objects, things society seems to toss away. I started using recycled wood as my canvas.

As my neighbors remodel, I’m there to collect the old wood and new pieces left over. I bring them home and look at each one, studying the grain, the knots, the scars and scratches. I cut the pieces, clean and sand them. As I work on each piece, I try to find the hidden beauty in it. I try not to cover up its history, but to include it the finished work.

My Art work is therapy, food for my soul. It heals, I hope that by being part of this project I can help in a small way. Help these children know the JOY that creating art can bring to them."

A FAMILY OF SELF TAUGHT ARTISTS

Hi - This is my story, as briefly as I can possibly tell it, and as unbelievable as it sounds.

My oldest son is a cancer survivor. We learned he had a malignant tumor shortly after he turned 16. He is now 33 with 4 beautiful children. However, his wife is to undergo tests on June 1st to see if she has cancer.

My husband's older sister is currently receiving 'in-home' hospice care because she is in the final stages of cancer.

One week ago my husband, who is one of the artists in our Ebay art group, was diagnosed with cancer and has to have tests next week to find out to what extent.

Certainly my family, many of whom are also selling their art on Ebay, need something 'positive'(like participating in this cause) to keep our minds off our own problems and our hands busy doing something worthwhile.

Almost one year ago I left the corporate environment of a large insurance company I was with for 7 years, in order to work on my art on a full time basis. With the stress related to the world of corporate insurance, I felt the change would be more beneficial to my own health. Working the type of job I was working left no time for my art, and that made me sad. I had to decide if I wanted to continue with the good pay and great benefits of the corporate environment or if I could possibly give up all of that and gamble on my art. Well, here I am....

Ironically, I received the invitation to join this group the same day my husband and I were discussing our need to 'get involved again'. With our lives being personally touched by this disease and having gone through the unbelievable emotions involved in hearing that your child has a malignant tumor, we couldn't think of a better 'cause' to become involved with.

I have been creating art and free lance design professionally since 1992 and selling works on eBay off and on again since 2001.

I saw this program and really felt it was a such a fantastic and worthy cause that I needed to jump in and participate. It has been a dream of mine to develop workshops for children to come and explore the creative experience...Especially those who have difficulties in a standard school environment. I live in a very remote area and the funding for these schools is so limited that they do not have the arts included in their curriculum. Frustrating as that is one area that will help them with all the rest!

The painting that I have in mind is a part of "The Circles" called "Out On A Limb". It is an environmental representational painting about the Island of Madagascar and all the destruction and loss of species and some depictions of some of the endangered species. It is currently listed in agallery in Phoenix, AZ for $4,300.00.

"Stars in the Sky" - Celebrities Support HITW Camps

The benefit event for the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps titled, "STARS IN THE SKY," was a huge success! At 7PM on April 21 at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, Honorary Co-Chairs Paul Newman and Julia Roberts gathered along with Paul McCartney, Robin Williams, Tony Bennett, Grammy nominee Heather Headley, the world-renowned Emerson String Quartet, Hezekiah Walker and The Love Fellowship Choir, and the awe-inspiring acrobatic group AntiGravity to perform in the Ultimate Variety Show. The performance was directed by James Naughton and produced by Lou Adler and Kevin Duncan. Following the sold out show, dinner was held in the Tent at Lincoln Center which included a live auction co-auctioneered by Robin Williams. "Stars in the Sky" was presented by RBS Greenwich Capital.

My personal story is that I have been involved in art most of my life (52 years old now). I began as a self taught artist, then I pursued some formal training.

I worked in the tattoo industry for better than half my life, until I was diagnosed that I had two potentially life threatening illnesses.

I have a son and grandson that mean the world to me and when I heard about the kids living with terminal illness, it struck a chord in my heart.

I know how creating art takes my mind and spirit to a happy place, sort of a method of meditation, so... all I knew is that I needed to be involved in this project to try and bring a smile or some laughter to the kids. After all, laughter is good medicine. I could go on and on but for now I will keep it short.

I am coming from Adelaide, South Australia. This is my second visit to USA my first was 15 Years ago when I was 20.
